    Tripod Block. Side table/stool

              

     

    An eye catching and versatile and light weight side table, featuring a butchers block end-grain style construction. The top is made from laminated blocks of end grain 30 x 30 Oak and is 50mm thick. The legs are turned from 40mm Diameter Ash which taper to 25mm with a scalloped foot. The legs penetrate the top and are secured with Oak wedges providing an striking colour contrast design feature. The table is finished with 3 coats of water based lacquer and then wax polished. Size 300 dia x 530 tall. Also available in other heights 450/650. The table must be kept out of direct sunlight and temperature and moisture variations.

    The cabinet is made from Oak and veneered board. The top is made from laminated blocks of Oak and fitted with crown grain mitered legs. Cabinet carcass is reconstituted wood resembling wenge veneer, fitted with an adjustable internal shelf. The cabinet is fitted with an Oak sided dovetailed drawer with Cedar bottoms. The door and draw features Oak and Wenge handles. The design can be provided in different configurations from multiple draws, or single door or open and size and material variations. The cabinet is finished with satin lacquer. Size L 650 x W 420 x D 420

    Designed as a multipurpose table, a stool or a handy platform to stand on. The legs are made from 40mm solid Oak legs with a 35mm thick top joined with hand cut dovetails. The top  features a hand sized cutout which make it easy for carrying around. The underside of the top has a scalloped edge to accentuate the simple form. The ‘Dovetables’ are available in different sizes and timbers available on request.  

    Single Dovetables are available in three main sizes:

    5 dovetails = L, 600 x W, 500 x H, 420.

    4 dovetails = L,600 x W, 400 x H, 400.  

    3 dovetails =  L,  600 x W, 300 x H,  420.

    Inspired by the John Coltrane classic ‘my favourite things’ in which the musical structure, and spirit of the innovative time in jazz history is reflected in the form, colour and detail. Made in red Birdseye Maple and Ripple Sycamore with a white leather writing surface.

    Designed for a passionate yachtie. The design is inspired by masts, rigging and yacht decks. Made in Tawa with Totara lines on the base supported with stainless steel stays on the cross tree’s. The marquetry compass is made from timbers that come from all points of the globe and is surrounded by birds eye maple. 900 Diameter x H 940

    The initial idea for the dining table was inspired by the Star Wars table designed by Fred Baier in the Birmingham city museum and then adapted with the star wars X wing fighters in mind. Made from black lacquered Ash laminated legs joined together with Limed Oak panels and a limed Oak central boss. The form with a glass top gives a very light but striking presence. 1200 diameter x H 740

    Designed for one of the producers of the UK soap opera ‘Emmerdale Farm’. The dining table is designed to create the illusion of a floating top on tapered legs. Made throughout in French Cherry, the leg corners are finger jointed, they support the top on Aluminium posts set back from the edge. The top features a quarter sawn diamond matched Cherry veneered panel with a sycamore inlay. Finished with satin Lacquer. L 1000 x W 1000 x H 920

    A simple design made in a wide range of material combinations from veneers, solid wood, Corian, laminate or lacquer. The version shown is made in stack laminated birch plywood with birds-eye maple long edge, cherry legs with wenge detail line between the leg and top. Pradeep’s table can be made in a variety of sizes or a series of modular squares and rectangles to suit a range of dining layouts. L x 900 x W 900 x H &40

  • MDM. Side table

    MDM. Side table

           

    Designed for the office of the Masters of Design Management at Unitec. The brief stated that the table upon close inspection must create a sense of curiosity’. This was achieved by using an “impossible” dovetailed bridle joint. The joint is emphasised by the choice of contrasting materials. How can these parts be made and assembled? It is dovetailed in all three planes and looks impossible to put together.  The  underside ends are deeply tapered to expose the ply laminations. This further relates to the brief the to looks thick from the front elevation and thin from the side but is actually thick. Made with Jarrah legs and Maple rails with Birds Eye Maple veneered onto a birch plywood core. L x 1800 x W 400 x H 950

    The idea originated from a grove of Nikau Palms at Titirangi beach. The Turned Macrocarpa pillars are stained with Green Shellac on the top, the base is laminated Birch Plywood, the colour and striped look are reflective of the landscape and the beach.  L  900 x W x 320 x 450

    Designed for an exhibition at the Titirangi Community Gallery in a personal response to the destruction of the a large area of native Titirangi bush. The Puriri log which is lit with an infinity mirror giving the impression of depth into the earth is pierced with a tapered copper pipe that represents all things water.     An occasional table inspired by Japanese calligraphy. the table is designed as the central feature in an interior that contained a collection of traditional Oriental art. Made in red lacquered mahogany, The legs and rails are turned and feature sculpted joints and round through tenons which show in both the legs and the top frame. This table explores a design and construction theme in several variations. L 1200 Diameter x H 450

    Designed to explore the idea of ambiguous function and form. the powder coated aluminium rods look as though they pierce through the boxes and could slide on these rods. An exploration of the table reveals that the drawers can open at both ends. The table is made in solid sycamore. The drawer boxes are joined with decorative lapped finger joints.     Designed as a side table/plinth for an exhibition at the Manukau art centre. Inspired by the woven interior Tukutuku panels in the Marae at Auckland Museum. This is made in solid Oak stained with natural water stains, the central cross is painted white. L 450 x W 220 x H 450

    A simple side table with shaped legs doweled into a central boss. This boss has a round tenon that joins the turned top piercing it to form a decorative feature with a walnut wedge. made with three or four legs 300, 400 dia x 420 H

    Inspired by both the ‘Liberty’s of London’ Arts and craft ladderback chairs and traditional Winsor chairs. The legs are made in Cherry, the seat and rungs in sycamore with walnut wedges in the seat tenon.

  • Auckland Botanical Gardens Bench

    Auckland Botanical Gardens Bench

       

     

    A Series of benches, planters and drawers for use in the Botanic gardens reception foyer. The benches can be arranged in many different sweeping formats. Designed by Neil Smith and inspired by the roof structure of the newly built Huakaiwaka visitor center. The seat and base is made in laminated pine, the support is made in cast stainless steel, the benches are bleached then finished with blond Danish oil.

    The form is inspired by the Silver ferns seen in the West Coast bush as the fronds unravel in the Koru form . Carved from block laminated pine, the top surface is finished by texturing with wire brushes, bleached and lime waxed. The underside is French polished with green-tinted shellac.  L 2600 x W. 500 x H 450

    A client had a Puriri tree cut down that turned out to be hollow and was transformed into a garden bench. The log has been sanded and polished on the top surface. The front face and underside are left natural and unfinished. The log is mounted on Oak supports.

    I needed a stool to comfortably practice my Bass Guitar on that also encouraged good ergonomic posture. The design was based upon plant forms arising from the ground. The sculpted seat rotates set upon the dovetailed base which acts as a foot rest so the bass is held at the correct angle. The stool is a great general purpose stool. The base is made in Elm and the seat is turned and carved in Maple. L 600 x W 350 x H 420.

  • Air New Zealand Reception Desk

    The client presented a rough concept drawing based upon a the intention to reflect New Zealand’s unique aesthetic in The Koru lounge. These desks differentiate Air New Zealand from the generic airport lounge aesthetic seen all over the world. The development process involved designing a carcass that was assembled from CNC cut components, then wrapped in Totara flexi ply, bound with no8 wire with a pierced band revealing a Paua shell detail, this is mounted on shist tumbled rocks reflecting rivers and beaches. The Totara post carcass contains a storage draw to hold administration computers. These were then installed in Koru lounges all over the world.

    The interior design concept was entirely based upon the clients wish to reflect a pacific island theme complete with a palm tree. Featuring a fish tank on the back wall.

  • Colson’s Kitchen

    Colson’s Kitchen

     

            

    Made in recycled Kauri. The bench tops are filled with black epoxy and finished with Oil, an  end grain chopping board in the window corner above a rotating storage shelf. The push to open door frames have a Kauri frame with textured and anodised stainless steel door panels. The cupboards are fitted with pull out baskets, bins or white-ware. The Arga cooker is enclosed in a tiled console.

    A remodeling of an existing kitchen replacing the doors and cladding the fascia’s in which the client wanted to reflect his love of boats and portholes. The the cupboard doors were replaced with yellow tinted hoop pine panels in which etched glass panels are inserted into the square cutouts.
