Edward Prince

Born in Otley, England, the North Yorkshire hometown of the world’s most famous furniture designer, Thomas Chippendale. Edward trained in 3D design at Jakob Kramer College of Art, Leeds. Fine Craftsmanship and design at Rycotewood College of Fine Craftsmanship, Oxford and environmental design at the University of West Midlands, Birmingham.  His professional practice began with corporate interior design consultants Business Design Group, then an upholstered furniture designer for Colorol home furnishing before establishing his own workshop and studio restoring antiques, designing and making Hi-Fi /audio storage, one-off designer furniture and limited-edition accessories.

Emigrating to New Zealand in 1994 Edward worked as the designer for New Zealand’s largest furniture manufacturer Criterion Furniture. Followed by design projects for various architects, interior designers, manufacturers and retailers before lecturing in furniture making and three-dimensional design at Unitec. A period intense study culminated in receiving a master’s degree in design management, writing a first-class honors thesis on ‘Developing holistic creative thinking skills for three-dimensional design’.  Leaving the world of academia to put theory into practice both running courses in creativity and the design and making one off “art” pieces and batch produced furniture.

Then followed a few years of teaching design technology in secondary schools including Kings College, MAGS, finishing at Pinehurst where he twice had A level students achieve ‘best in the world’.
